THAILAND, BANGKOK : EEE Rating

Sustainism is a project focused on bringing together stakeholders in sustainability to collaboratively drive missions with shared sustainability goals, ensuring these missions are accomplished efficiently. This time, we are concentrating on advancing the sustainable tourism mission in collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Tourism Council of Thailand, the Thai Bioplastics Industry Association, and numerous other stakeholders. Together, we aim to establish tourism standards under the EEE (Environmental, Economic, and Ethical) symbol, welcoming and catering to tourists who prioritize environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and exemplary business practices (ESG).

The EEE Rating is a mechanism designed to promote sustainability within the tourism industry, focusing on developing standards and certifications for restaurants and tourism establishments that operate sustainably. This aligns with the strategic direction announced by TAT for 2024, which emphasizes sustainability and the use of eco-friendly energy. TAT is collaborating with global partners to expand into new markets and promote sustainable travel. Additionally, TAT is leveraging digital content to attract younger travelers, such as Generation Z and Y, by promoting sustainable tourism practices and experiences through innovative digital strategies.

The assessment criteria include five aspects
1.Source of raw materials, traceability, and cultivation standards.
2.Safe and clean storage and cooking of ingredients.
3.Eco-friendly packaging.
4.Carbon-reducing transportation methods.
5.Cleanliness management and waste management that is non-toxic to the environment.

Experts from Mahidol University and Suan Dusit University are collaborating to establish a certification process that is recognized by tourists.

The biotechnology industry in Thailand has immense growth potential in supporting other industries for sustainability. With the rapid advancement of science and biotechnology, Thailand has the capability to develop and improve environmentally friendly and sustainable products and processes. For example, the development of biomass for renewable energy, smart agriculture that uses fewer resources while increasing yields, the production of bio-based substances used in the food and cosmetic industries that do not cause pollution, and the research and development of biopharmaceuticals that are effective and environmentally safe. Furthermore, the Thai government has policies to promote and support investment in the biotechnology industry, creating opportunities for new investments and research that strengthen various industries for future sustainability. The ability to efficiently use natural resources and develop eco-friendly technologies positions Thailand to be a leader in the biotechnology industry both regionally and globally.
